Is your Dog a Hero? Nominate Him for the National Hero Dog Award

The local chapter of the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals announced today it is seeking nominations for its 33rd annual spcaLA National Hero Dog Award, honoring dogs that perform heroic acts to protect or save a life.

The contest is open to companion dogs that are not formally trained to carry out rescues or trained as police dogs.

Past winners have included a dog who woke its owner when carbon monoxide gas was leading in the home, a dog who alerted a family when their home caught fire and a German shepherd that ran for help when its owner suffered a seizure.

Nominations must be submitted by email to info@spcaLA.com by April 24. Nominations should include a description of the heroic act, which must have occurred in 2014. The act must be verified with a newspaper clipping, police report or other type of official documentation. Submissions should also include a name, address and daytime phone number.
