A compressor shutdown at the refinery may have touched off the flaring.
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — A flaring incident at a refinery in unincorporated Contra Costa
County north of Concord and Martinez sent a plume of smoke high into the air, Contra Costa firefighters said Sunday night. The smoke was first reported to the Contra Costa County Fire Protection District at 6:39 p.m. at the Marathon Martinez Refinery at Avon.
A compressor shutdown at the refinery may have touched off the flaring, said a district spokesman, who had little other information about the incident Sunday night.
A voicemail and an email left with a Marathon refinery spokeswoman were not immediately returned Sunday night.
