Ahead of the appearance of any West Nile virus cases, a county district is expected to be fogging mosquitoes on Wednesday in Martinez.

MARTINEZ - To combat large populations of mosquitoes in Contra Costa County ahead of the appearance of any West Nile virus cases, a county district is expected to be fogging mosquitoes on Wednesday in Martinez.

Contra Costa Mosquito & Vector Control District will be fogging by truck to control adult mosquitoes in an area of Martinez between 4 a.m. and 6 a.m., the district's officials announced Tuesday.

The area that's expected to be treated is bordered on the north by the Carquinez Strait, on the east by Interstate Highway 680, on the south by Marina Vista Avenue and Susana Street, and on the west by Green Street.

Around the same area was targeted late last year after groups of mosquitoes, sentinel chickens and dead birds tested positive for West Nile virus in the county.

The district reported that there have been no recent detections of the virus in this area.

People can develop West Nile virus infections through just one mosquito bite.

The virus may cause fevers, headaches and body aches, and in some rare cases, neurological damage or death.
