Horse Struck By Car, Euthanized: Contra Costa Animal Services
The horse could not be saved after it was hit by a car near Knightsen, authorities said.
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — A horse struck by a vehicle Sunday evening near the Knightsen area of unincorporated eastern Contra Costa County had to be euthanized, according to a spokesman for animal services. The crash occurred around 7 p.m. along Delta Road just off Byron Highway.
A person was riding the horse when an Audi station wagon struck it. The rider fell off and suffered minor injuries, according to the California Highway Patrol.
The horse, however, could not be saved.

"It had two broken hind legs, and was not recoverable, so we euthanized it and brought it back to our Martinez facility so it wouldn't be on the side of the road and be a traffic hazard," Contra Costa Animal Services spokesman Steve Burdo said Monday morning.
A livestock removal specialist has been requested to come get the carcass.

Horses are extremely heavy animals, which makes recovery difficult and unlikely when they break a leg.
