Hurricane-Force Winds Strike Contra Costa County

CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — Hurricane-force winds walloped Mt. Diablo early Tuesday amid a high wind warning in the Bay Area.

The National Weather Service said its Mt. Diablo substation recorded 84 mph winds around 3:30 a.m. That's squarely within the criteria of a Category 1 hurricane, which can be anything between 74 to 95 mph.

Hurricane-force winds were also reported near Fremont at Mt. Alison, where 77 mph winds were recorded shortly before 8 a.m., according to NWS. Winds reached 81 mph at Mt. Umunhum in Santa Clara County.

The North Bay saw even stronger winds, with two areas in Sonoma County reporting winds akin to a Category 2 hurricane. The Healdsburg Hills and Middletown areas also saw winds that reached Category 1 hurricane-level.
