ABOUT THE FILM

It took 16 years for baseball owners, fans and the media to make Jose Canseco. It took them less than an hour to destroy him.

No figure in recent sports history has been as polarizing as Jose Canseco. Millions of baseball fans remember him as a powerhouse slugger with the speed and agility to earn one of sport’s rare statistics – 40/40, 40 home runs and 40 stolen bases in a single season.

But millions more remember him as a whistleblower whose admission to steroid use exposed a scandal that overshadowed his own remarkable 16-year major league career, and led to congressional hearings that cast a pall over America’s greatest pastime – baseball.

In this new documentary film written and directed by Bill McAdams, Jr., Jose Canseco: The Truth Hurts, Canseco addresses some of the most controversial questions surrounding his life and his career. What emerges is a nuanced portrait of a man driven by grief and a promise made. It was a promise he fulfilled, but it was a promise that cost him a great deal more than he ever anticipated.

Only time will tell whether history will remember Jose Canseco as a legend, a whistleblower or a scapegoat, but this candid documentary will leave audiences convinced of one inescapable fact: The Truth Hurts.

Director Bill McAdams, Jr., says, “Making this documentary has been very eye-opening for me. I think the audiences will be surprised by the candor and tone of the film, and interested to see some of the missing pieces to the puzzle.”
