Man Fatally Struck By Amtrak Capitol Corridor Train Near Martinez

The man was trespassing on the Union Pacific Railroad tracks, an Amtrak spokesperson said.

PORT COSTA, CA — An eastbound Amtrak Capitol Corridor train struck and killed a man on the tracks in Port Costa on Thursday night, according to Amtrak and Union Pacific Railroad officials. The man was trespassing on the Union Pacific Railroad tracks in unincorporated Contra Costa County around 9:15 p.m. when Train No. 548 struck them, Amtrak spokesperson Olivia Irvin said, hit them.

Union Pacific spokesman Tim McMahan confirmed the man died due to his injuries. McMahan didn't say if the man died at the scene west of Martinez or at a hospital.

The train, which had 52 passengers onboard, was delayed for 3 hours and 10 minutes before continuing on to Sacramento. Nobody aboard the train was injured, according to Irvin.

Amtrak officials stressed that anyone walking around or on railroad tracks should exercise caution, citing that 2,000 people are killed in grade crossing or trespassing incidents in the U.S. each year.
