Martinez Could Raise The Bar For Bars

City officials, police are taking a look at whether or not to allow new bars in Martinez, and the problems sometimes associated with bars.

The Martinez City Council is taking a close look at problems that have allegedly surrounded the city's bars in the Ferry Street area. The Council approved a 45-day moratorium on new bars in town.

Police chief Gary Peterson asked the City Council to consider a stay on allowing new bars in Martinez. That request came after word got out that a bar was interested in moving into Martinez.

"The number of calls around bars is clearly disproportionate. The number of arrests around 'bar bars' (versus restaurants) is literally 10-1," Chief Peterson said during the July 24 City Council meeting.

Martinez has three bars: Ray's Lounge and Whiskey Lane, both on Ferry Street, and Cue & Brew on Arnold Drive.

During the 45-day period, City officials will look at new rules regarding bars within the city. A point of possible contention is clarifying the legal difference between traditional restaurants that serve alcohol and "bar bars" that might serve snacks.

"Let's say you've got a microwave oven and a freezer filled with 'Hot Pockets,' in my opinion, that's not a restaurant," Mayor Rob Schroder said.
