Rain Floods East Bay Freeways

Between 1 and 2 feet of standing water has been reported on some roadways, in some cases because of clogged storm drains, according to CHP.

EAST BAY, CA — As the Bay Area was getting drenched Thursday with heavy rain from a fall storm, flooding was leaving multiple freeways and lanes blocked or closed across the East Bay, according to traffic reports from both Caltrans and California Highway Patrol.

According to the CHP's Golden Gate Division traffic management website, roadway flooding has been an issue on Bay Area roadways since 8 p.m. Wednesday.

Between 1 and 2 feet of standing water has been reported on some roadways, in some cases because of clogged storm drains, according to CHP traffic logs.

Early Thursday morning, eastbound Interstate Highway 580 just east of the MacArthur Maze in Oakland was closed, and eastbound state Highway 4 just east of Pine Street in Martinez was also shut down due to heavy roadway flooding.

At about 10:30 a.m. Thursday, flooding was also reported on I-680 southbound between Monument Boulevard in Pleasant Hill and N. Main Street in Walnut Creek . The right lane was blocked by flooding and motorist were advised to expect delays.

Flooding was also reported on the southbound I-680 ramp to Highway 24 in Walnut Creek, where the right lane was affected.

The National Weather Service expects showers — some with heavy rainfall — to continue throughout the rest of the day Thursday.
