Fatality On Tracks Between Martinez, Richmond Delays Trains
Contra Costa County coroner's officials confirmed a person was struck and killed on the tracks.
CONTRA COSTA COUNTY, CA — A person who trespassed Monday morning onto the train tracks between Martinez and Richmond was struck and killed by a Capitol Corridor train, according to the Contra Costa County Sheriff-Coroner's Office. Coroner's officials did not immediately disclose information about the person's identity.
Capitol Corridor first tweeted about the incident at 10:18 a.m. Monday, reporting that Train 531 was stopped outside of Martinez because of a "trespasser incident."
Amtrak Spokeswoman Olivia Irvin said an individual trespassed onto the tracks at 10:10 a.m. Monday when they came into contact with Amtrak Capitol Corridor Train 531, which had departed the Martinez station moments earlier on its way from Sacramento to Oakland.

"There were no injuries to the 65 passengers on board or crew members," Irvin said in an emailed response to Patch. " ... The Amtrak Police Department is working with local law enforcement to investigate the incident."

Train 528 from Richmond was delayed by around 35 minutes.

Train 531 was said to be back on the move by 12:32 p.m. — approximately two hours and 20 minutes behind schedule.

"Amtrak continues to work closely with Operation Lifesaver (OLI) to communicate the dangers of grade crossings," Irvin said. "Each year, about 2,000 people are killed or injured in grade crossing and trespassing incidents nationwide."
