Two Killed In E. Contra Costa Co. Crash

A speedy Lexus sideswiped a Toyota making a lane change on Railroad Avenue this weekend, sending the Lexus into a tree.

MARTINEZ, CA -- Two people died after a crash Saturday night in Pittsburg, police said.

Officers responded shortly after 10 p.m. to a crash that happened when a Toyota traveling south on Railroad Avenue attempted to make a lane change while a Lexus traveling at a high rate of speed tried to pass the
Toyota, according to Pittsburg police Capt. Steve Albanese.

The driver of the Lexus sideswiped the other vehicle and lost control, ultimately crashing into a tree on the right shoulder of the road near Alturas Avenue, Albanese said. A passenger in the Lexus was pronounced dead at the scene and the driver of the Lexus had to be extricated. He was taken to John Muir Medical Center, where he succumbed to his injuries early Sunday, authorities said.

The driver of the Toyota suffered minor injuries in the crash and cooperated with investigators. The Contra Costa County coroner's office has not released the names of the victims, pending notification of their next of
kin.

Police did not say whether alcohol or drugs were factors in the crash. The collision is under investigation and no more information was released.
