UPDATE: Toxic Garbage Can Removed

Martinez officials respond to complaints of a garbage can leaking toxic material on Elderwood Drive.

Martinez City officials heard the complaints from residents and responded to a potential environmental hazard.

Neighbors in the area of Elderwood Drive and Beechwood Drive alerted the Contra Costa County HazMat Department and city officials about a garbage can nearby that was filled with containers of hazardous household materials, including motor oil and other toxic fluids.

Martinez City Manager Philip Vince and Public Works Director Dave Scola confirmed the City of Martinez disposed of the garbage can late this week. The garbage can had been tagged earlier with a citation.

The can had reportedly been sitting on the street for more than a week and had starting to leak, allowing a black fluid to ooze toward a storm drain.
