As a couples therapist, many couples come into my office saying they want a divorce. As we explore the history of their relationship, a comm

In most cases, it's not the differences between the couple that were the problem, but rather it's how the couple managed their differences over time that was the problem. Does one or both shut down to keep peace and eventually feel resentful? Do they argue and get into power struggles, fostering unresolved issues which corrodes the relationship? Most couples wait an average of 6 years to get help, and by then, sometimes it's too late.

But other times, the couple can learn crucial skills to begin to connect over their differences. They can learn how to collaborate as a team, and how to stay away from the negative cycles, and their marriage can be saved. Learning these skills and tools early on can save couples a lot of unnecessary heartaches down the road. Why don't we know these skills automatically? Because they are counterintuitive.

This is why I have chosen to teach Marriage Prep 101 Workshops for Engaged, Seriously Dating or Newlywed couples, with my husband. Learning these skills early on in their relationship helps set the trajectory for success. Via teaching, self and relationship assessments, interactive exercises and discussion, we really give couples a personalized relationship blueprint that they can take with them and apply "from this day forward." By the time couples leave our workshop, each couple leaves equipped with the tools needed to sustain their their connection over time.
