Library Focuses on the "Eclipse of the Decade"
The Menlo Park Library is holding a series of free events surrounding the upcoming solar eclipse.
On Monday, August 21st, all of North America will be treated to an eclipse of the sun. The Menlo Park Library is inviting the public to a series of special eclipse-related events to be held between July 13 and August 21.

Fraknoi, Foothill College Astronomy Department Chair, & the author of a new children’s book on eclipses, When the Sun Goes Dark, will describe how eclipses work, why they are one of nature’s most spectacular sights, exactly when and where the eclipse of 2017 will be visible, and how to observe the eclipse and the Sun safely. At the conclusion of the program, everyone attending will receive a pair of safe viewing glasses for observing the sun.

MESOAMERICA: PYRAMIDS, HIEROGLYPHS, & PLANETS
Tuesday, August 1, 6:30 p.m.
For Adults & Teens
Linda Janklow of Peopleologie will talk about Mesoamerican contributions to our calendar system, mathematics, astronomy, and architecture. Afterward, participants will press ancient-style carved animal hieroglyphs into clay to create a wall hanging-plaque.
MAKE AN ECLIPSE VIEWER
Saturday, August 12—Sunday, August 20
Drop in during open library hours to create a simple solar projector to keep your eyes safe. Instructions & materials will be provided.
XTREME SCIENCE MAGIC: ECLIPSE, PLANETARY, & ROCKET SCIENCE
Thursday, August 17
By preregistration only, for grades 1-5
It’s special hands-on fun, when the library’s program room will turn into a planetarium, surrounding the students in stars and light.

THE ECLIPSE
Monday, August 21
9:00-11:00 a.m.
The library will provide safety glasses & snacks, to enjoy the eclipse live.
ECLIPSE (RE)VIEWING PARTY
Monday, August 21
6:30-7:30 p.m.
Drop in for an evening revisiting of the big event, as it was seen in its path of totality.
