Menlo Park Starbucks Workers Won't Lose Benefits in Obamacare Backlash

Starbucks employs about 100 people at its five Menlo Park locations.

Starbucks will not decrease employees' hours to avoid giving them health insurance as mandated by Obamacare, CEO Howard Schulz announced on Monday.

With five Starbucks locations in Menlo Park, that's about 100 people who will keep their benefits, using the About.com average of 20 employees per Starbucks.

According to the Huffington Post, "Starbucks currently provides healthcare to part-timers who work 20 hours a week or more."

Both McDonald's and UPS have cut hours and/or health benefits as the Affordable Care Act sets in.

"Other companies have announced that they won't provide coverage for spouses; others are lobbying for the cut-off to be at 40 hours," Schulz said. "But Starbucks will continue maintaining benefits for partners and won't use the new law as excuse to cut benefits or lower benefits for its workers."

Starbucks in Menlo Park is located at 325 Sharon Park Dr., 863 El Camino Real, 1401 Willow Rd., 3590 Alameda De Las Pulgas and 643 Santa Cruz Ave.
