New Kaiser Redwood City Med Office moving close to completion
"Topping Out" event features hundreds of Kaiser Permanente Redwood City workers "making their mark" on ceremonial I-beam lifted to top

A thirty-foot long, 2,000 pound construction beam was lifted to the top of the steel skeleton of the new Kaiser Permanente Redwood City Medical Office late in the afternoon June 11th. The white-painted beam bore an American Flag on one end and a small, potted evergreen tree on the other end: both are traditional “topping out” symbols that a construction project is moving toward completion safely.

During the lunch hour, hundreds of Kaiser Permanente Redwood City doctors, nurses and staff signed their names and initials and a few cartoons on the beam, as part of a “Make Your Mark on Kaiser Permanente Redwood City History” celebration.
Sheila Gilson, senior vice president and area manager of the KP Redwood City Medical Center, also signed the beam with her name, the date, and then drew a little flower on the beam:

“It’s a fabulous day in Redwood City,” she said, “all of our staff and physicians are coming together here to participate as “One Redwood City” and marking the future of our organization.”
A large construction craned gently lowered the beam onto the roof level of the building’s steel skeleton. Construction workers bolted it into place there.

“Today we’re celebrating Kaiser Permanente’s ongoing commitment and investment on behalf of our members with what will be a beautiful new office building,” said Dr. William Firtch, the medical center’s physician in chief after he signed the beam. “We’re also celebrating the people of Kaiser Permanente who’ll work in the building, and whose signatures are on the beam.”

The new Kaiser Permanente Redwood City Medical Office will open in April of 2021.
