Census 2020 Starts In March, What You Need To Know

The next national census is just around the corner! Starting March 12th, the U.S. Census Bureau will invite everyone living in the country to participate by filling out a quick and easy form online, by mail, or over the phone. It doesn’t matter what your citizenship status is, how old you are, or if you have had trouble with the law. Everyone counts. And it only happens every 10 years, so don’t miss this opportunity to make sure your family and community get the representation and resources they deserve.

The national census is so important to our democracy that it is required by the U.S. Constitution. It is how we make sure everyone has equal representation in government and everyone gets their fair share of resources. It is also used to make important community decisions, like where to build homes, parks, schools, and roads and where to offer health, childcare, and transportation services. Businesses also rely on census data to decide where to open stores and offices, what products to develop, and how to market their services.

There is a lot at stake for all of us in the upcoming Census 2020. If not everyone is counted, we won’t have an accurate picture of our city and some residents won’t get the services they need. Schools will not have enough teachers or resources. Public transportation won't meet demand and traffic will get worse. And there won’t be enough affordable housing to go around. That’s why it’s important that you and everyone you know participates in Census 2020.

The census is also legally required. It only asks for basic information: name, date of birth, sex, race, and ethnicity. Not only is it quick and easy, it is safe to complete because no personal details will be shared outside the Census Bureau – not to ICE, FBI, Welfare, or local law enforcement. There are very strong laws and many steps taken to keep your personal information confidential for 72 years. The Census Bureau only reports out statistics (how many people live in a given area).

If you don't fill out the census form by end of April, a Census Bureau representative may visit your home to get the information they need. So, be on the lookout for your invitation with instructions on how to complete the census form online, on paper, or by phone in different languages. If you need help filling out the form, there will support at local libraries and from community groups.

El Censo 2020 empieza en marzo: Lo que necesita saber

¡El próximo censo nacional está a la vuelta de la esquina! A partir del 12 de marzo, la Oficina del Censo de los Estados Unidos invitará a todos los que viven en el país a participar en completar un formulario rápido y fácil en línea, por correo o por teléfono. No importa su estatus legal, su edad, o si ha tenido problemas con las autoridades. Todos cuentan. El recuento solo sucede cada 10 años, así que no pierda esta oportunidad de asegurarse que su familia y su comunidad obtengan la representación y los recursos que se merecen.

El censo nacional es tan importante para nuestra democracia que es requerido por la Constitución de los Estados Unidos.
