Should California Ban the Sale of Fireworks?

We asked Patch readers from across California what they thought - here's what you said.

Fourth of July weekend is upon us which means parades, barbecues and of course - fireworks. California allows for the sale of “Safe and Sane” fireworks, meaning the products must come with a State Fire Marshal's seal of approval. Local officials are urging residents to use caution when using fireworks this season due to dry conditions stemming from the drought.

According to a report from the Consumer Product Safety Commission, 11 deaths resulted from the use of fireworks last year, and approximately 11,900 people went to the hospital with firework-related injuries.

Patch asked readers and Facebook users across the state if they thought California should ban the sale of fireworks. Here's what your neighbors and fellow Patch readers told us:

  • "Fire season has started early. Banning fireworks is the responsible thing to do."
  • "Yes! It's a no-brainer!"
  • "No. This is America. It's how we celebrate our Nation's Birthday!"
  • "YES, but the ones people shoot off are already banned."
  • "Yes. [I] live in irrigated desert amidst a record breaking drought. It is a recipe for disaster."

Wherever you stand on the issue, the National Fire Protection Agency cautions the public, "to avoid the use of consumer fireworks and instead, to enjoy displays of fireworks conducted by trained professionals." The complete list of local fireworks shows can be found on Patch's 2016 Fireworks Guides for Los Angeles County, San Diego County and Northern California.
