
In 2000, I was driving thru town and noticed that kids don't seem to play outside like they did when I was a kid. There were several basketball hoops outside and no one using them.
So I pulled some dads together and said let's get our kids together this Saturday and teach them pick up basketball. Let's call it Dirt Bowl since it is outside.
We had about 8 kids show up and we had a ball. I thought we were done after that day, but kept getting calls to do it again. Before I knew it, I had over 50 kids clamoring to play

Now, 19 years later Dirt Bowl is going strong. We have indoor and outdoor courts available and about 170 kids each weekend.
And...the cool thing is, not only are parents bring their kids, but a lot of kids show up on their bikes by themselves looking for a game (old school!).

Dirt Bowl was born in Mill Valley and pulls kids from all over Marin and San Francisco. We don't keep score or standings to allow kids to "just play and enjoy".
This year we are opening up a Novato Dirt Bowl to serve San Rafael and Novato communities.
