Kristin Scott Thomas, Sean Penn And Margot Robbie To Attend 40th Mill Valley Film Festival

Films "Darkest Hour" and 'Wait For The Laugh" will open the star-studded event on Oct. 5.

MILL VALLEY, CA — The Mill Valley Film Festival is internationally renowned for attracting award-winning filmmakers, actors and seasoned industry vets. It also prides itself with a reputation for launching new films and creating awards season chatter.

This year’s 40th edition of the film fest takes place Oct. 5-15 and will feature a lineup of dazzling titles. One opening film of note is “Darkest Hour,” Joe Wright’s drama about Winston Churchill’s rise to power. It stars Kristin Scott Thomas — who will attend the screening along with Wright — and Gary Oldman.

“Wait for the Laugh,” Jason Wise’s documentary about the epic career of comedienne Rose Marie, will also make its debut on opening night.

Throughout the festival, a series of tributes and spotlights will celebrate exceptional film artists including Scott Thomas, Sean Penn, Dee Rees, Holly Hunter, Todd Haynes, Andrew Garfield, Margot Robbie, Greta Gerwig and Jason Clarke.

MVFF’s centerpiece title is “Last Flag Flying,” Richard Linklater’s road movie about three Vietnam-era Navy veterans who reunite at a funeral. Linklater will be at the festival to present the film, which stars Steve Carell, Bryan Cranston and Laurence Fishburne.

Closing the fest are films “Lady Bird,” Greta Gerwig’s love letter to her hometown of Sacramento, and “The Current War,” Alfonso Gomez-Rejon’s historical biopic about the fierce competition between electricity titans Thomas Edison and George Westinghouse.
