Cyclist Fatally Hit Trying To Cross I-280 On Bicycle

Witnesses saw the man carry the bicycle down the embankment near the Highway 101 interchange and ride it across I-280 on Wednesday night.

SAN JOSE, CA -- A bicyclist was killed tonight as he tried to cross Interstate Highway 280 near the U.S. Highway 101 interchange and was hit by a car, the California Highway Patrol said.

The accident was reported at 9:47 p.m., said CHP Officer Ross Lee. Witnesses said they saw a man carry a bicycle down the embankment to the freeway railing, lift the bike over the railing, climb over the railing and get on the bike.

The man then drove out into the southbound lanes of I-280, where he was hit almost immediately by an eastbound car, Lee said. The bicyclist was thrown a significant distance, and was
pronounced dead at the scene.

Rain doesn't appear to have been a factor in the accident, Lee said. Neither alcohol nor drugs are suspected factors, either, at least regarding the driver of the car.
