Dixon Landing Park Public Art Project​ Proposals Now Accepted

From the City of Milpitas: The City of Milpitas’ Art Commission invites you to submit a proposal for the Dixon Landing Park Public Art Project. Project is to be located inside the Dixon Landing Park. The piece should be three dimensional and free standing.

Dixon Landing Park

Dixon Landing Park is one of Milpitas largest and most highly used parks. The park is used by the City’s many youth sports groups which include basketball, tennis, baseball, soccer and cricket. Please note all dates, except proposal deadline, are subject to change. Deadline for receipt of Proposals: July 20, 2017 (no postmarks)

  • Notification of artist finalists: July 26, 2017
  • Models Due: September 8, 2017
  • Selection and Approval: September 25, 2017
  • Installation: June 2018

Public Art Component

Artists interested in pursuing this commission are asked to design a visually interesting, safe and functional, 3-dimensional public art piece that enhances Dixon Landing Park.

The piece will be located inside the park; the exact locationwill be dependent upon the composition of the art piece. The City will determinethe exact placement of the art piece and may choose to change the location

dependent upon other activities.

The piece must meet safety requirements as they relate to Dixon Landing Park. Artists must address engineering, construction, lighting, installation, and maintenance standards as well. The piece must also meet any applicable California ADA requirements.

The art piece must be fabricated with bolting or attachment to a concrete surface or suitably designed footing. The Artists shall be responsible for the design of any required footing for the art piece. The artists shall be responsible for the complete installation of the art piece including any required footings upon approval from the City.

The art piece must be designed to withstand the elements and allow for proper drainage.

The artist’s scope of work and responsibilities shall include all required design, engineering, fabrication, construction, materials and installation of the art piece on site complete and in place.

Eligibility Qualified artists are encouraged to apply by complete submittal of the attached “Materials Submitted.” Artists shall also have the ability to execute the City’s standard consulting services contract without requirement of material change to content, and shall be capable of providing the required levels of insurance.

Budget

The artist’s fee for this project is up to $30,000 (includes all costs related to the design, engineering, materials, fabrication, travel expenses and installation of the artwork, including required insurance and shipping.) The City does not provide design, engineering, or installation services to contracted artists.

Selection Process

The Milpitas Art Commission will review the materials submitted by interested artists and make the Selection of Finalists. The Milpitas Art Commission will forward its recommendation to the Milpitas City Council for final approval. The City of Milpitas reserves the right to reject any or all applications or proposals, or to terminate the selection process without prior notice. The City of Milpitas reserves the right to terminate the project at any time.

The Milpitas Art Commission is an advisory body made up of 11 citizens with related expertise or a sincere interest in the arts. Members are appointed by the Milpitas City Council to oversee and make recommendation on the City of Milpitas Public Art Program.

Materials to be Submitted

Proposal Deadline: Thursday, July 20, 2017

To be considered for this project, artists must submit all of the following.

Proposed art pieces, concept, design, etc. will remain the property of the artist throughout the selection process.

1) Cover Letter – Not to exceed one page

Artists should indicate the reason for their interest in the project and briefly describe their approach to this commission that includes: materials and project budget breakdown. The cover letter should include the artists name, mailing address, daytime phone number, and email address.

2) Photo Resume

Artist must supply up to six images (digital) of previously completed and/or representative work, numbered according the to the completed image list provided. In addition to the six digital images, Artist must also include a digital image of the required rendered drawing (see below).

Images must be submitted on a CD or thumbdrive. Each image must be saved as an individual 300 dpi JPEG file, no larger than 1MB. Images must be saved in PC format. Images must be listed in the same order as on the CD/Thumbdrive and must correspond to the numbered file name and titles that are on the CD/Thumbdrive.

3) Rendered Drawing

Artists must submit a rendering of their proposal. All materials must be submitted on 11“x 17” paper. A color palette representing the colors the artist will be using (if applicable) should be indicated on the bottom right side of the rendering.

4) Completed Image List

Artist must complete either the provided image list or create their own, including the same information.

5) References – Not to exceed one page

Late or incomplete applications will not be considered.

Artist must include a resume of their education, professional accomplishments and three professional references.
