El Camino Real Crash Victim Identified

SANTA CLARA COUNTY, CA - A Seaside man who died in a "spectacular" solo-vehicle crash early Friday morning in Santa Clara has been identified by the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office as 30-year-old Jeren Nedd.

Nedd was driving west on El Camino Real on the wrong side of the road when he lost control of his Toyota Camry and ran over the center median into lanes of traffic at 4:46 a.m., according to police Capt. Wahid Kazem.

The Camry traveled across four westbound lanes and onto the sidewalk of El Camino Real and Alviso Street. The vehicle struck a small retaining wall that separated the sidewalk and parking lot of a motel, Kazem
said.

The impact of the vehicle smashed the retaining wall and carried the Camry into two large Conex boxes, or metal shipping containers, in the parking lot of the motel, according to the police captain. The force of the vehicle moved the boxes several feet and caused Nedd's Camry to become pinned between two of them, coming to rest on its side.

The first reporting officer initially could not see the car, believing that the damage could be associated with a hit-and-run since the two metal containers, retaining wall and the early morning darkness obscured the view, Kazem said.

Police started working just before 5 a.m. to move the car, remove Nedd from the crash scene and clear all destroyed elements from roadways, according to Kazem.

Kazem called the crash "spectacular" in relation to speeds and trajectory at which the car was going as it traveled down the road.

Police do not yet know whether drugs or alcohol played a part in Nedd's death, the police captain said.
