Fire On I-680 In Milpitas Extinguished: CHP

Update: The fire alongside Interstate 680 is out, but traffic is still slow going.

MILPITAS, CA — A brush fire that broke out off Interstate 680 at mid afternoon on the southbound side of the Montague Expressway in Milpitas is extinguished, but fire crews and the California Highway Patrol remain at the scene to keep an eye on it, CHP San Jose Ross Lee reported.

As of 4:52 p.m., CHP reported it expects the two agencies to remain there on the scene for another hour.

"We're keeping an eye on it," Lee told Patch.

The blaze spanned in about a half dozen spot fires over a half-mile section of highway between Yosemite Drive and the Montague Expressway, which is also referred to as the Landess Avenue, according to Milpitas Fire Battalion Chief Jason Schoonover.

Conditions are hot and ripe for fire.

The third and fourth lanes were blocked even after the fire was put out, snarling traffic during the rush hour Monday commute.

The fire is under investigation.

"It's hard to say what the cause is at this point," Schoonover said.
