Fremont Teen the "Coolest Vegan Alive"

A young Fremont resident has been named the Coolest Vegan Alive in a competition sponsored by peta2, the youth division of People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals.

Phoebe Collver-Freeland, 16, a member of peta2’s “Street Team” and youth advisory board, makes animal rights-inspired duct-tape wallets with messages such as “Free the Orcas” and “McCruelty.”

Her work has an active following on Instagram and has inspired many people to go vegan, Peta officials said. Collver-Freeland, a lifelong vegan, also volunteers with a local animal rescue group and cares for two rescued goats.

“There’s nothing cooler than finding your own unique way to help animals and that’s exactly what Phoebe does with her creative vegan wallets and her passion for volunteering,” said Marta Holmberg, PETA’s director of youth outreach and campaigns.

Collver-Freeland is one of two top prize winners. Her prize includes a chance to appear in a personalized Web feature, a trophy and a collection of cruelty-free items.
