Inmate Found Dead In Milpitas Jail Identified

The Santa Clara County Sheriff's Department believe the death on Sunday is related to suicide.

MILPITAS, CA -- A man who was found dead in custody at Elmwood Jail in Milpitas on Sunday has been identified as 36-year-old Carlos Aguilar, according to the Santa Clara County medical examiner's office.

Sheriff's deputies found him unresponsive in his single-person cell at 7:56 p.m. Sunday and began administering CPR and first aid, according to the county sheriff's office. He was pronounced dead at 8:27 p.m. and is believed to have killed himself, sheriff's deputies said.

Aguilar had been booked into the jail on July 25 for allegedly carrying a loaded gun in a vehicle and driving under the influence. Sheriff's officials, the district attorney's office and the medical examiner's office are conducting a joint investigation into his death.
