Milpitas Legoland Discovery Center Breaks Ground With 50k Bricks

The interactive amusement park based on the popular building-block toy is set to go into the Great Mall in 2020, a first for California.

MILPITAS, CA — A company built on building blocks is sure to have an extraordinary groundbreaking.

Such is the case for Legoland Discovery Center, which will highlight its groundbreaking ceremony filled with community dignitaries such as Milpitas Mayor Richard Chan Thursday morning with the tumbling thud of building blocks. More than 50,000 Lego bricks delivered via dump truck will officially mark the start of construction with digging shovels into the new interactive amusement park at the Great Mall.

The groundbreaking ceremony for the new 31,000-square-foot interactive attraction of the renowned building-block toy expects to set up shop in 2020 where the Sears was located in the the sprawling mega shopping center spanning over 1 million square feet between Interstates 680 and 880.

The proposed Legoland Discovery Center is more like a place of learning than playing. Think Exploratorium in San Francisco with its own merchandising style and design flair.

Beyond Tran, the students of the Stratford School in Milpitas and Bertie, the official mascot of Legoland Discovery Center, will join S. J. Sharkie, who cheerleads for the NHL hockey team in the festivities set for 447 Great Mall Drive at 10:30 a.m.

When complete, children and big kids alike will find exciting new Lego play areas to frolic in such as a brick pool, master classes in the creative workshop with a Lego master model builder, Imagination Express train ride, earthquake table, 4D cinema, special party rooms for birthdays and other celebrations as well as a cafe, Lego retail shop and Miniland area that features models of local iconic landmarks.
