For Mystery-Loving Moms: Mother's Day Brunch At Winchester House

SAN JOSE, CA – Does the mom in your life have a ghoulish, mystery-loving side? Then make her Mother's Day a total delight with a brunch event offered at the Winchester Mystery House in San Jose.
The eerie, world-famous home in San Jose is hosting an 11 a.m. brunch, including complimentary mimosas, in the Winchester Estate Greenhouse on Sunday, May 13, followed with a 65-minute tour of the mansion.
Tickets are $99 per adult, $29 per children under 12, and those 5 and under are free.

The tour will take visitors through 110 of the 160 rooms of the stately mansion of Sarah L. Winchester, heiress to the Winchester Rifle fortune.
See a window built into the floor, stairs leading to ceilings, doors that open onto blank walls and a seeming obsession with the numeral “13,” cobweb motifs and more, according to the estate's operators.

A medium convinced Mrs. Winchester that if construction was done on her home continuously, noise from the sawing and pounding of nails would keep the spirits away. So work began on the fabulous mansion in 1884 and continued, 24 hours a day, until her death in 1922. Total cost: $5.5 million. According to an inflation calculator, that's more than $80 million in today's money.
By the numbers, the house has 161 rooms, 40 bedrooms, 13 bathrooms, 52 skylights, 47 fireplaces, 40 staircases, three elevators and two basements. Oh, and then there's the seance room. She needed that to consult with the spirits who advised her on ways to build the home that would confuse any menacing ghosts who were not bothered by the construction noise.
