“India is experiencing a huge surge in COVID-19 cases,” said Ramesh Hariharan, past District Governor 5170. “This has resulted in overwhelming the country’s hospitals and led to thousands of people dying. India has also experienced a massive shortage of oxygen, and the administration is struggling to vaccinate people amid this surge. Let us do our part to help India through this unprecedented crisis, he added.

Together with the American Red Cross

Contact: (Rotary and Red Cross): Camilla.Boolootian@redcross.org

Since the outset of the outbreak, the Indian Red Cross is an essential partner working at the frontlines alongside the Government of India. Even now thousands of Indian Red Cross workers across 550 districts from New Delhi to Bangaluru are helping to run quarantine centers, providing meals and rations to migrants and people in host communities, provide oxygen cylinders to people with severe COVID-19 symptoms and stepping up vaccinations, while also providing free masks, soap and gloves to those most at risk.

The Indian Red Cross in coordination with the Indian Government and the support of the global Red Cross network is:

  • Coordinating with the Ministry of Health to support Indian Red Cross branches with medical facilities with the provision of oxygen cylinders, oxygen concentrators, and COVID-19 prevention kits. The procurement of medical supplies is being supported by the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).
  • Mobilize additional ambulances, blood services as well as 24/7 helpline services.
  • Scale up the risk communication and awareness campaigns across the country to address misinformation on COVID/immunization
  • Procuring and distributing hygiene kits, masks, sanitizers/soaps to the vulnerable populations as well as front line Red Cross staff and volunteers.

Together with Rotary e-club of SV Smart Village and Pratham USA (https://prathamusa.org)

The Rotary Club of Cupertino is supporting a global grant for an oxygen generator in New Delhi. In the meantime, there is an additional effort to provide for more immediate distribution of oxygen products, but India needs funding.

Pratham has a very successful history of mobilizing resources and people effectively all across India and have established the Pratham Covid Relief Fund. Their plan includes:

- Securing and delivering oxygen concentrators as well as rapid tests, vaccines, and personal protective equipment (PPE) to Indian hospitals and care centers.

  • Exploring the conversion of Pratham vocational training centers and district offices into alternate facilities for Covid treatment.

- Coordinating field response teams to aid in the distribution of supplies and ensuring relevant and timely dissemination of accurate information in regional languages.

Rotary Club of Silicon Valley for Global Impact (https://rotaryclubofsvfgi.org)

Contact: Ravi Pathak: ravi_pathak@yahoo.com

A warlike emergency has emerged due to a new round of Covid-19 pandemic spread across India. Rotary Club of Silicon Valley for Global Impact, with its members from Overseas Volunteer for Better India (OVBI) and the International Association for Human Values (IAHV), is stepping up relief efforts providing the much-needed oxygen cylinders & oxygen concentrators to people in need across the country. Since there is low availability of hospital beds for critically impacted patients, providing much-needed supplies to those who are home quarantined is the only means to aid in their survival and treatment while staying at home.

This campaign is a plea to raise funds to procure Oxygen Concentrators in larger quantities to meet the huge demand and help millions impacted. With the supply chain in place, the IAHV team can get these machines imported in 4 to 5 days. An Oxygen Concentrator cost is approximately $800 per unit. IAHV may also use these funds for other critical equipment such as Ventilators, Beds, etc., depending on how the situation evolves further.
