Walmart Cashiers Win Lawsuit On Prolonged Standing

Cashiers for the nation's largest retailer took a stand against the retailer and won a class action suit amounting to $65 million.

OAKLAND, CA -- The nation's largest retailer is set to pay $65 million out to its cashiers for failing to provide adequate seating, Fortune reported.

Walmart staffer Nisha Brown brought forth the class-action suit to U.S. Superior Court of Alameda in 2009 on behalf of 100,000 current and former California cashiers who are eligible to receive payouts as a result.

The employees cited a 2001 California wage law that determined staff must be provided "suitable seats when the nature of the work reasonably permits." Walmart contended the nature of a cashier's job does not call for that and fought the suit to no avail on the basis the company would lose revenue, Fortune announced.
