YBLT Camp - First Session

Youth Business Entrepreneurs

My name is Victor Cheng. I am a junior from EVHS, and this past week, I’ve had a great opportunity to be the “Teacher’s Assistant” of the Youth Business Leadership Training (YBLT) Camp, hosted by the organization, YIBI (Youth International Business Initiative). Having been a student of this camp just the year before, and my team and I had placed second in the YIBI Grand Conference. I was very curious as to how this would work. Some of my buddies from last year also decided to join us as teacher's assistants. Last year, the camp had only two teacher’s assistants to guide us through the year, which meant that not only were they overwhelmed with students, but also with mentor requests. Luckily we were only assigned one team. Everyday, the camp started with a lecture from an esteemed business individual. These talks included business operations; financing tips; marketing strategies; patenting; and more. Everyday there was a new speaker (unlike last year) and some days even had two. After the talks, there was lunch and then each group presented their projects to us to judge. Based on our criticism, the teams moved into collaboration work to fix their errors, and to add more content. By the end of the week, there was an immense difference between both their presentations and their public speaking. I was incredibly proud of the group I mentored, called LightPay™, whose idea was to take your credit cards and put it in a centralized system. They took second place in the YIBI semi-finals and are now progressing to the YIBI Grand Finals along with Poliglot and FresheAir. The YBLT Camp is an extraordinary experience that is truly eye-opening and very educational. For me, YIBI has had a big impact on my life. After the Grand Finals last year, I decided to open my very own sub-organization in San Jose, and it was officially founded February of this year. We focus on promoting leadership, entrepreneurship and members get to go to fantastic events and lessons. I am the president of the San Jose branch. If you are interested or wish to join, please contact me through the San Jose branch website, www.sjyibius.org.
