DAR Sews Masks Across America

Local members of the Daughters of the American Revolution volunteer time and sewing skills to make masks for medical facilities.

The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution rises to the ongoing need for homemade fabric masks during the COVID-19 pandemic. So far, DAR members of all states have sewn and donated more than 57,000 masks, and the number is growing rapidly. One member of the Mission Viejo Chapter NSDAR, Laura Nygaard, has sewn 201 masks so far, and she is still at her sewing machine making more. Other members of the chapter are also sewing masks.
Nygaard’s masks have been received across the nation by medical facilities in California, Virginia, Louisiana, and Wyoming, to name a few. She sews masks for family and friends and is also sewing with a local group called RSM Face Mask Volunteers, which provides kits for volunteers to sew masks. This group takes requests from hospitals, nursing homes and other medical facilities in need of masks. The masks are created so they can fit over N95 masks to extend their use. They can also be worn alone. Sewing masks is one form of volunteerism that can be done while in COVID-19 isolation and it is so helpful to the many people who risk their lives for our communities. NSDAR and many other volunteer organizations are working hard to fill that need.
