High Temps Expected in Southland, But Relief is Coming

Southland temperatures will reach the 90s on Tuesday on what is expected to be the last day of the region’s 12-day heat wave, which will be followed by precipitation and cooler temperatures resulting from a storm, National Weather Service forecasters said.

Forecasters said strong Santa Ana winds would continue to buffet the region Tuesday morning, with gusts of 30 to 40 miles per hour in the mountains and of between 25 and 35 mph along the coast and in the valleys.

The NWS forecast sunny skies today and highs of 78 in Newport Beach; 79 in Laguna Beach; 80 in San Clemente; 85 in Avalon; 86 in Irvine; 87 in Saugus and at LAX; 90 in Anaheim and Mission Viejo; 91 in Long Beach, Burbank, Woodland Hills and downtown L.A.; 94 in Fullerton; and 95 in Yorba Linda.

Also in the forecast early Tuesday morning is some precipitation Wednesday and Thursday in the form of showers or rain. Sunny weather is expected to return on Friday, and a warming trend will get underway Saturday, with temperature highs reverting to the 80s in some communities on Sunday. The normal high this time of the year is 68.

The impending precipitation will result from a storm expected to strike mostly north of the Southland, said NWS meteorologist Kathy Hoxsie. Nonetheless, it may produce between a quarter-inch and a half-inch of rain in Southern California through Thursday, she said.
