Mission Viejo DAR Sews Up an Early Veterans Day Project!
DAR Service to Veterans Committee sews, fills and delivers 58 Dopp Kits for hospitalized veterans at the Long Beach VA Hospital
The Mission Viejo Chapter of the Daughters of the American Revolution got an early start to celebrating Veterans Day this year. Members of the DAR Service to Veterans Committee planned a Veterans Day project to sew 50 Dopp Kits for hospitalized male veterans at the Long Beach VA hospital. The zippered Dopp kits were sewn out of vinyl fabric and lined with cotton. Each Dopp Kit was then filled with all the toiletries that incoming patients need. When veterans are admitted to the hospital, they often have nothing but the shirts on their backs—no toothbrush, not toothpaste, no razor or anything—so the Dopp Kits will be a very welcomed sight to them. Fundraising for this DAR Veterans Day project was so successful that the committee was able to sew and fill an additional eight sparkly pink Dopp Kits for hospitalized female veterans. During the pandemic, no visitors are allowed into the hospital, so the kits were dropped off at the VA Hospital Volunteer Services office. Donated items must be quarantined for two weeks prior to handing them out to hospitalized veterans, so the Service to Veterans Committee worked quickly to deliver them two weeks prior to Veterans Day.
The National Society Daughters of the American Revolution is one of the largest service organizations in the nation. Any woman who is interested in finding out about joining the Mission Viejo Chapter of DAR can go to www.missionviejo.californiadar.org.
