Monrovia Election 2019: Measure K, Sales Tax Increase

MONROVIA, CA — The 2019 Monrovia election is Tuesday, November 5. Residents will vote Measure K, a measure that would raise local sales tax by 3/4 cent to be used for local services and programs, according to the City of Monrovia website.

The question on the ballot is as follows:

To keep local sales tax dollars in Monrovia to fund general city services, including community center improvements, police, fire, 911, senior services, parks, recreation, clean water and others, shall the Monrovia Transactions and Use Tax Ordinance of 2019, placed on the ballot by the City Council, be approved, imposing a 0.75% transactions and use (sales) tax to collect approximately $4.5 million annually spent only in Monrovia, with a Citizens Advisory Committee and annual spending plan?

Currently, Monrovia's sales tax is 9.5 percent, and the maximum sales tax rate in California is 10.25 percent. There is 0.75 percent of available sales tax capacity remaining that local districts can vote on to raise.

"LA County is looking to go back to the voters to ask for additional sales tax increases in 2020 and 2022," the City of Monrovia said. "With this in mind, we believe Monrovia has a window of opportunity to get ahead of this situation by approving a local sales tax measure to protect our resources and keep our money local."

Thirty-one out of the 88 cities in LA county have already reached the maximum sales tax of 10.25 percent, the City said. Nine other cities have raised their sales tax to 10 percent.
