Monrovia Hosts Ribbon Cutting For Community Garden
The garden gives families the opportunity to grow their own garden, and to learn about urban gardening and sustainability.
From the City of Monrovia: The City of Monrovia, in partnership with Mountainside Communion, held a ribbon cutting ceremony to celebrate the new Community Garden. Designed to provide interested families with a space to grow their own garden, the Community Garden will also have a variety of opportunities for the public to learn about urban gardening and sustainability.
“The Monrovia Community Garden is an incredible way for the community to gather and work collaboratively on a shared community project through gardening,” said Dr. Kristin Ritzau, Garden Director. “We strive to grow, not only flowers, fruits and vegetables, but in learning about sustainability and what will help us lead our healthiest lives together as neighbors.”
The garden has 21 private wooden beds, with four ADA-approved beds as well as seven communal small container gardens. Each bed is equipped with a water efficient drip irrigation system with most of the private gardens protected by fencing. Plot holders and the public have access to a community compost hub, which collects vegetable, yard and food scraps, provided by LA Compost. Additionally, the garden features several public demonstration beds providing a space for educational workshops, interpretive signage and communal access to vegetables.

The community is invited to a free workshop to learn more about gardening at home! On July 27, at 9 a.m., join us for Veggie Gardening 101 and learn about seasonal planting, thinning, watering, companion planting and basic pest control.
Future Community Education Workshops topics will include: composting, canning, fruit tree care, mulch and organic soil workshop, pest management, summer planting and efficient watering, seasonal vegetable planting and more.

The garden, located at 303 W Colorado Blvd., on the corner of Magnolia Avenue and Colorado Boulevard is open for the public from sunrise to sunset. Those interested in visiting the garden are encouraged to park in the church parking lot or the alley parking lot.
