Have you ever wondered which side of the dog park would be best for your dog? Here are some guidelines to help you decide:
Sometimes size doesn't matter! You can take your dog into the little dog park if your dog is little (of course!), old, timid, and/or a big puppy. These dogs typically do better on the little side. The big dogs can play pretty rough at times. Little dogs on the big side could get trampled and stepped on. Old dogs could get body slammed and it may be too much action for them, causing them to be grouchy. Timid dogs and puppies tend to get "dominated", which is natural behavior for dogs striving to be "top dog." I have personally taken my gentle giant of 170 lbs. into the little dog park when the big dog side became too much for him. Yes! Even a dog of his size can be dominated by a dog less than half his size! They figure if they can conquer him, they can conquer anything! The only problem with him on the little side is that they sometimes mistake his legs for small tree trunks and try to mark their territory. I do see many little dogs on the big dog side. Most of them can handle themselves pretty well. They are quick and have an attitude that commands respect. They are also small enough to hide under the benches or someone's legs for a safe zone. It can be a dilemma when you have two or three dogs of different sizes and demeanors. One thing you should not do is keep your little dog leashed in the big dog park. That makes the little dog vulnerable and more defensive. The other dogs can pick up on the vibes. In the photo, you can see two dogs of very different sizes cooperatively playing tug'o war with a stick. The little dog has some confidence! The big dog is tolerant and says, "Really?" But he enjoys the company!
