Gems of the Southwest
Jewelry makers bring the art of hand-wrought silver and semi-precious stones to Native American gathering in Moorpark
Native American artisans from Arizona and New Mexico will be joining local indigenous vendors at the Children of Many Colors Powwow at Moorpark College, July 20-22 .
Powwows are a rich mixture of celebration and ceremony, meeting place and market place. The outer circle of the gathering is composed of vendor booths, non profit groups and educational exhibits. Move in closer and you'll find the canopies of Indian families situated all around the dance arena, where they and their loved ones participate in the innermost circle of the powwow.
A number of the vendors who will be attending Redbird's 18th Children of Many Colors Powwow are coming from distant points in the southwest, bringing along their signature wares; silver and copper hand-hammered jewelry inlaid and adorned with turquoise, coral, malachite and other semi-precious gems. Each piece is unique, and each artist brings to their craft an individual style.

The work of Milford Calamity blends silver and gold in his bold, elaborate bracelets. Christopher Hoskie takes the art of metal stamping to new heights in his solid silver pieces. Frances Begay's gemstone bracelets recall the traditional style of metal work, with flower designs and braids surrounding deliciously blue turquoise.
Contemporary designs mingle with the traditional. Roughly thirty booths with all nature of arts and crafts will form the outer circle of Redbird's powwow, mingled with a number of non profit organizations, a Chumash storyteller, flint knappers, Redbird's raffle booth and on Sunday, acupuncturist Dr. David Lee.
