Say Goodbye to the Monthly Gas Meter Man Visit

La Crescenta is getting some new data collection units from the Southern California Gas Company that will eliminate the need for a meter man to come check on each home's gas consumption one by one.

For some in La Crescenta, the monthly visit of the gas man to come read the meter will be a thing of the past.

The city's gas provider, the Southern California Gas Company, has installed data collection equipment in three locations in La Crescenta which will allow some homes in the town to have their information digitally read at that central data point, avoiding the need to have someone enter each yard and read it.

Another benefit of the new system will be that the company will be able to give people digital updates on their gas usage that are accurate to within a day or two, giving people a way to cut down on their gas use, according to Mandy Shaw, of the Gas Company's public affairs division.

According to Shaw, the Gas Company's eventual plan is to install the data collection units to every city it services in the county by 2016, making the meter man obsolete.

Each data collection station will service about 1,500 homes, according to Gas Company spokeswoman Denise Campos.  The stations were all installed within the last week.

The Crescenta Valley Town Council website notes that the equipment was installed at the following locations:

  • Near 5404 La Crescenta Avenue - La Crescenta
  • Across from 6065 Canyonside Road - La Crescenta
  • Near 4801 Ramsdell Avenue - La Crescenta
Campos noted that the Gas Company will be unable to monitor specific appliance use from any one home using the technology.  She said anybody with privacy or other concerns can opt out of using the system.

Editor's note: This story has been updated with new information from the Gas Company indicating the stations have already been installed.
