An earthquake registering 4.8 on the Richter scale struck in the Santa Barbara Channel at 7:38 a.m. Wednesday.
The earthquake was centered about three miles west of Isla Vista but readers on the U.S. Geological Survey's website reported feeling the quake as far north as Atascadero and Bakersfield as far south as Irvine and as far east as Palmdale.
No reports of damage were reported immediately.
