5 Things: County Fair and Theater Fun
Patch's quick take on the essential things to know, the most interesting things to do and best places to be on Wednesday, July 31.

Here's a handful of things to keep in mind for today.
- The Ventura County Fair begins today! Running through Aug. 11, the fair will open at 11 a.m. Monday through Friday (with the exception of Aug. 6, when it will open at 10 a.m.) and at 10 a.m. on the weekends. Exhibits and admissions close at 10 p.m. (commercial exhibits will remain open until 11 p.m. on weekends) and the fair closes between 11 p.m. and midnight. General admission is $12 for those 13 and older, $9 for children 6-12 and seniors 65 and older. Super seniors (100 years and older) and children 5 and younger are admitted for free.
- Moorpark College is staging The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee through Aug. 11. The long one-act musical comedy is set at a junior high school spelling bee with quirky competitors and just as quirky adult organizers. Visit the school's website for show times and to purchase tickets, which are $15 for adults and $10 for students and seniors.
- As well, season tickets are available now for the High Street Arts Center's next season, which begins in August with a melodrama, Shame of Tombstone. Also on the playbill this season are Fiddler on the Roof, South Pacific, The Producers, Tom Sawyer and the annual Christmas Magic show. Tickets—$89 for regular adult tickets, $69 for seniors and $49 for children—are available on the HSAC website.
- Open registration for Moorpark College's fall semester begins Monday. See the school's online registration guide for details.
- Reminder: The City Council meeting scheduled for Aug. 7 has been cancelled. The next regularly scheduled meeting is set for 7 p.m. Aug. 21 in the Community Center.
