Update: Driver Dies in Grimes Canyon Accident

The driver in a single-car accident was found dead Wednesday night after the vehicle apparently veered off of Grimes Canyon Road and down an embankment.

The California Highway Patrol received a call at 7:04 p.m. from a good Samaritan who saw headlights shining up from an embankment along the road in an unincorporated part of the county just north of the rock quarry and Waynes Way.

Responders found the car in the embankment. The body of the driver, whose name has not been released, had been ejected from the vehicle, according to a CHP spokesperson Wednesday evening. The driver had been the only person in the car, the spokesperson said.

According to a statement issued by the CHP Thursday morning, the 39-year-old Oxnard man was driving his 1990 Honda northbound and failed to negotiate a left curve in the roadway. The vehicle went up and over a dirt embankment and rolled over several times as it fell into a canyon, the statement said. 

The driver was ejected out of the vehicle and pronounced dead at the scene.

The identity of the driver will be released pending notification of next of kin by the Ventura County Medical Examiner's Office.

The cause of the accident is still under investigation. The Highway Patrol is asking anyone who may have witnessed the accident to call 805-553-0800.
