Housecleaner Arrested for Area Jewelry Thefts

An Oxnard man was arrested  Thursday for stealing thousands of dollars worth of jewelry from elderly victims throughout Ventura County, according to a report from the City of Camarillo Police Dept.

Manuel Cervantes Moreno, 39, reportedly stole more than $30,000 in jewelry from five different victims in Camarillo, Moorpark, Oxnard and Ventura while he was employed as their housecleaner, the report said.

Camarillo police said they have been investigating reports of jewelry thefts from homes in the Leisure Village retirement community since September. These reports were followed by reports of similar crimes in Camarillo, Moorpark, Oxnard and Ventura.

After a search warrant was served at Moreno's home on Thursday, detectives reportedly found illegal narcotics, ammunition and stolen property.

Moreno was booked into the Ventura County Jail for five counts of grand theft, possession of stolen property, possession of illegal narcotics, under the influence of narcotics, and possession of ammunition by a felon, the report said.

His current bail is set at $150,000.
