Hugh Brittain, at 78, could just continue to enjoy retirement after his 34 years of teaching elementary school, but no. Back in the 1970s and 1980s when he was teaching, Hugh would have his sixth grade students keep a journal or diary for a week as a creative writing exercise. The students could write anything they wanted in their diary. He promised never to read any of them. The diaries were sealed up and Hugh kept them to give to the students once they graduated. Which he did, for many of them. But he couldn’t for some since years had passed and students had moved.

After all these years, Hugh took the remaining 26 and posted pics of each sealed diary, along with the name of the student to a Facebook group. That way, he was able to locate – and mail diaries to – 19 of the students. As of March, 2021, he only had 7 “unclaimed” left. Hugh’s reputation among his students was of being a phenomenal teacher, one for whom students would go the extra mile, as he did for them. Apparently, Hugh’s heartfelt (and reciprocated) devotion didn’t stop at retirement.
