Meet An “Amazing” Who Has Devoted Her Life To Others.
Sister Helen, 81, recently published a memoir, "River of Fire: My Spiritual Journey."

Helen Prejean, a Roman Catholic Sister, at 81, recently published a memoir, “River of Fire: My Spiritual Journey.” It chronicles how she became an advocate of social justice. Best known for her book, “Dead Man Walking,” which became a highly successful film in 1995 and later an opera, Sister Helen has counseled and worked with prison inmates.
Sister Helen has also been an educator, and has given over 50 commencement addresses to colleges and universities worldwide. In addition, Sister Helen founded “Survive,” an organization devoted to counseling the families of victims of violence. For these and her many other efforts, Sister Helen was given the “Pacem in Terris Award” (Peace on Earth”), an Catholic Church honor named after an encyclical letter by Pope John XXIII. It's awarded to people of goodwill who seek to secure peace among all nations.
