Evan Oswald, at 95, is still doing what he loves best—sports. OK, so these days it’s workouts online, but up until very recently, Evan competed in four National Senior Olympics, earning a gold medal even when competing in the 80-89 age group (there were no 90-94 year-olds available to compete with him). All this despite suffering from neuropathy and vertigo.

Often known as “the father of Hesston College intercollegiate sports,” by 1971, Evan established 10 intercollegiate sports programs over a period of 20 years at the school: seven for men, and three for women. Evan was the college’s first basketball coach, tennis coach, golf coach, baseball coach and first athletic director.

Evan lives at Glencroft Center for Modern Aging in Arizona. Until the pandemic shut down sports activities at the center, he was its activities director for 10 years. He looks forward to resuming his role when it becomes possible again. For Evan, attitude is everything, and whether to enjoy life or be fearful of life is a choice that each of us gets to make.
