Gwyn Haslock, at 74, is still riding the waves with the same enthusiasm that drew her to surfing back in the 1960s. At the time, it was very unusual for a woman to be a surfer, yet Gwen was undaunted. She worked her 9-5 job as a shorthand typist for the local county government and surfed on the weekends.

Gwyn became Britain’s first competitive female surfing champion in 1969, just 4 short years after standing up on a board for the first time. Now that Gwyn’s retired, she has the pleasure of surfing during the week, in addition to playing tennis, practicing her fencing and enjoying her garden. Life is good.
