Meet An “Amazing” Who Runs A Town & Tavern All By Herself

Elsie Eiler, at 87, is the sole resident of Monowi, Nebraska since her husband passed away in 2004. This in and of itself wouldn’t make her an “Amazing.” What does is the fact that she is the town’s “everything,” as in Mayor, Secretary and Clerk, owner of the one tavern where she is the chef, server and dishwasher, working 12+ hour days, Tuesday through Sunday. All this despite having been diagnosed with colon cancer 10 years ago.

You’d think Elsie would be lonely, but no. Why not? Because Elsie’s tavern is the community hang-out, where farmers, firefighters, construction workers and whoever else happens to be in the area come for what is called “the best burger” and a regular card-game (euchre) through the winter months. Now that’s a well-filled life.
