Tom Cornish, at 96, has knit and donated some 500 winter hats to The Salvation Army for those in need. A WWII vet, Tom has knitted for nearly 20 years but took up his hobby more seriously after his wife passed away about 18 months ago.

Volunteering and serving others is nothing new to Tom. He’s been doing it for decades but when the pandemic hit, Tom stepped up his own game. He decided to knit at least one hat a day, and considering that each hat takes about 4 hours to knit, that’s quite a goal. Plus, he shops for wool at discounted prices, scouting the stores to see where he can get the best deal.

Each hat costs about $6.00 in wool. Do the math--over 500 hats, and that’s quite a contribution of funds as well as effort. That being said, Tom knits because he wants to help those in need, and this is the best way he knows to do it. Thank you, Tom.
