Meet An “Amazing” For Whom Painting Is A Late-Life Passion

Trudy Smith, at 102, has an upcoming exhibition featuring some of her paintings at a local seniors community center in Eaton, Western Australia. Trudy’s approach to painting is very organic. She lets the blank canvas speak to her, as it were, rather than having an image in mind that she wants to express. Which would be anathema to many an artist, from writer to painter to musician for whom a blank page/canvas is terrifying.

Although she had a lifelong desire to be a painter, Trudy only began painting at 85. As a child, her father discouraged her from such a pursuit, and later her husband was so critical that it was only once he passed that Trudy was willing to pick up a paintbrush. How fortunate that she did. For it is now Trudy’s passion, and the artistic results are enjoyed by many.
